Appraisal Services

JG Antiquary Co. offers comprehensive generalist appraisal services with a focus on antiques, fine art, and decorative objects. Based in Seattle and serving clients nationwide, we provide certified valuations for estate planning, insurance coverage, IRS charitable donations, and sales-related purposes.

Formal appraisal reports are prepared for both private and corporate collectors and are fully compliant with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP), as established by The Appraisal Foundation. We also adhere to the methodological, ethical, and technical standards set by the Appraisers Association of America, as well as all applicable IRS and state tax guidelines.

Each appraisal report is thoughtfully prepared and includes detailed object descriptions, artist or maker biographies, provenance (when available), condition notes, and analysis of relevant market trends. Values are supported by a range of sources, including auction records, dealer data, and comparable sales.

Clients receive a signed digital copy of their completed appraisal report, and a bound hard copy is available upon request. Reports for estate and charitable donation purposes include the necessary IRS documentation and meet all required standards.

The result is a clear, well-researched, and professionally presented document that empowers collectors, executors, and institutions to make informed decisions with confidence.

The Appraisal Process

From your initial inquiry to the final report, every appraisal project at JG Antiquary Co. is handled with clarity, care, and professionalism. Here’s what to expect:

  1. Initial Inquiry
You reach out with a brief description of your item(s), including photos, dimensions, and any known details. We follow up to determine the scope of work and appraisal type needed.
  2. Proposal & Agreement
Once the scope of work is defined, including number of objects, appraisal type, and intended use, you’ll receive a proposal outlining the project details, fee, timeline, and terms. A signed agreement confirms your spot on our appraisal calendar.
  3. On-Site Inspection or Drop-Off
A physical inspection is conducted at your home, business, or our Seattle studio. We assess condition, take detailed notes and measurements, and capture photographs of each item.
  4. Research & Valuation
We begin researching the object’s maker, provenance, historical context, and current market comparables. Values are determined using appropriate methodologies for the assignment.
  5. Report Preparation
All findings are compiled into a formal, USPAP-compliant report that includes detailed descriptions, supporting analysis, images, and certification.
  6. Report Delivery
Reports are delivered electronically as a PDF. A bound hard copy is available upon request. Most appraisals are completed within 4 to 6 weeks of the inspection. Expedited service may be available for an additional fee.

Types of Appraisals

At JG Antiquary Co., appraisal reports are tailored to meet the specific purpose for which they are needed. Below are the most common types of appraisals we offer:

Estate Appraisals
Prepared for estate planning, probate, or estate tax purposes. These reports typically use Fair Market Value, as defined by the IRS, and are often used by executors, attorneys, and financial advisors to ensure accurate and defensible valuation of inherited property.

Insurance Appraisals
Developed to establish the Replacement Value of items in the event of damage, theft, or loss. These appraisals are often required by insurance companies to schedule high-value items or entire collections. Reports are designed to be comprehensive, with clear documentation and high-quality photographs to support future claims.

Charitable Donation Appraisals (IRS)
Required when donating items to a nonprofit institution and claiming a deduction of $5,000 or more. These reports adhere strictly to IRS standards and include the necessary Form 8283 and supporting documentation. The value is based on Fair Market Value and must be prepared by a Qualified Appraiser in compliance with USPAP and IRS regulations.

Equitable Distribution
Used in situations where a collection or estate must be divided fairly between heirs, partners, or other parties. These appraisals are conducted with sensitivity and clarity, using Fair Market Value.

If you are unsure which type of appraisal is appropriate for your situation, we are happy to help guide you through the process.

Fee Structure

Appraisal fees are based on time, scope, and complexity - never on the value of the objects being appraised. This ensures full compliance with USPAP and IRS guidelines and protects the integrity of the appraisal process.

Research & Document Preparation: $200/hour
This rate applies to all time spent conducting market research, analyzing data, and preparing the formal written report.

On-Site Examination: $100/hour
Covers time spent physically inspecting, measuring, and photographing the property. This may take place at your home, business, or at our Seattle studio.

Travel Fee: No travel fee within 20 miles of Seattle city center
For locations more than 20 miles away, a custom travel quote will be provided to account for additional time, distance, and accommodations if needed.

Minimum Project Fee: $500
All formal appraisal assignments begin at this base rate. This ensures coverage for project setup, inspection, and documentation, even for smaller assignments.

Rush Appraisal Surcharge: +25–50%
A rush fee may apply for projects requiring completion in under two weeks, depending on the complexity and scheduling availability.

Consultations & Verbal Value Opinions: $100 flat fee for 30 minutes
Informal consultations or verbal approximations of value may be suitable for planning or curiosity, but are not compliant for legal, insurance, or IRS purposes.

Please Note:

A formal proposal with an estimated total will be provided once the scope of work is determined.

Fees are never contingent on the appraised value of the object(s).

Invoices are issued upon completion, and payment is due upon delivery of the final report.

I value your time and investment. My approach is both efficient and thorough-I don't inflate hours or extend projects unnecessarily. Each assignment is handled with focus and integrity so I can deliver high-quality work and move on to serve the next client.
